Thursday soccer update!

I know you all were waiting with bated breath for this, so here it is!!!! Oh, you weren't? Well here it is anyway...

First, in Champions League action, Steaua got bounced in Bucuresti, 3-0 by French powerhouse Lyon and are 1-0-1 thus far in the group stage. It doesn't look to be any easier from here as their next two matches are home and away vs. Real Madrid.

In UEFA Cup, Rapid and Dinamo both advanced to the next stage with wins on the day. Rapid beat Nacional today, but needed extra time to secure the 3-1 aggregate win. Up 1-0 in the first leg, they went down 1-0 early today, making it 1-1 on aggr. In the overtime period however, Rapid was able to nick two goals, handing the Portuguese side their walking papers. Dinamo had a much easier time beating Greek side Xanthi, with an 8-4 aggr. dismissal. Dinamo came into the match up 4-3, and finished it off in style, 4-1!

Tonight, Knights FC battles Veteranos at 6:00PM! See you at Ninian Park!

the fat lady has sung

With tonight's loss the Angels say goodnight to an up and down season. It ended uneventfully with Cab Fare striking out in the bottom of the 9th for a 5-2 loss. That really sucks.

the baseball diaries

"So good so far, slow down haha."

As Mr. Jones would have us know, the Angels held off the inevitable far a day longer by beating chokeland yesterday, 7-1! Vladdy's two run shot was hot! Mice Hair tripled in two, Cab Fare taxied in a run, and # 1 Stunna and Howie aded some more! Magic pitched a heck of a game, too. It was all good, for now at least. Tonight the Angels get Texas at home for three straight before facing the gA's again to finish out the season. I won't bother you with highly improbably, truly impossible senarios of the, well, "If the Angels with this and chokeland losses that... blah blah blah..." I just hope they finish well, like win thier next seven in a row. Especially Friday since I'll be there.

In the other heated playoff races, the Twinkines now have a Wild Card magic number of 2! That'll be sweet to see the defending champ Black Sox out of it, haha!

The NL sees the Dodgers, Dads, Phills fighting it out for what looks like the remainding two spots if the Cards can hold off Houston in the Central.

Association Football

Knights FC face the Moose Knuckles tonight at the "Theatre of Dreams" otherwise known as Old Trafford. The Knights are 0-5 thus far but improving with each game. Fitness is taking it's toll on these blokes in the waning moments of the games, which is sad. All the promises of "I'll run this week" or "I'm gonna practice" apparently were lies.

the baseball diaries

"I stand in line, identity parade. I'm accused and tried of wasting valuable time." -- Bionic

Angels beat the Royales somewhat easily tonight, 5-2, on homers from Vladdy and Babyface. Sit'n Sleep, Howie and MoNapoli also had rbi's to support Barry Saunders' 8 k effort. But it may all be in vain because they are still 6 games back. If the score in the chokeland game holds up (down 2-1 to the tribe, 6th) they'll have a mathematical chance, so the experts say...

How about those Dodgers last night? I hate them, but that is pretty impressive, hitting 4 home runs in a row! Crazy! The first time that's happened since 1964.

The playoff race is honing down, now that the Mets have clinched the NL East and the other divisions are big time battles. The next two weeks should be awesome!

I Like Lists...

I'm a big fan of organization of thought, and what better way to organize thoughts than through a list? I'm also a big fan of current and ex-Angels, some more than others. I thought I'd post my favorites and then sit back and wait for the responses to said list roll in. I'm hoping to have at least two responses before Bush is out of office. I am going to start off with 6-10, because I really should be acting like a responsible adult, instead of waxing poetic on a bunch of baseball players. But alas, here we go...

10. BRIAN DOWNING
Easily my favorite 1980s Angel. Why? Oh, I don't know. Because he was a bad ass? During Downing's hey-day I was just a little guy, playing wiffle ball in the street with Hutch and B. Barnes, and I was always Brian Downing. Meanwhile, those guys picked superstars Ryne Sandberg and Cal Ripken as their heroes. How original. Needless to say, I would pretty much dominate. I also liked BD for these reasons:
- I always thought he looked like my dad. And Superman.
- He had a great first name.
- He got hit by a lot of pitches.
- He was responsible for one of my favorite catches of all-time. You know, the one where he and Fred Lynn both collide into the wall? You can see it at every Angel game during the "Calling All Angels" video. Side note: Am I the only one who likes this video?

9. PEP HARRIS
If you don't know me by now (cue Simply Red), then you may not know that I am infatuated with random middle relievers who may or may not have major-league careers spanning more than 3 years. Pep Harris is Exhibit A. I don't know if it was the name, if it was the funky pitching motion, or if it was the fact that I never saw the guy NOT sign autographs before the game. I just liked him. In fact, he is part of the WiseAndEck Favorite Bullpen of All-Time Club, which of course belongs to the 1997 Angels 'pen. More on that later. Harris only pitched three years in the bigs and had a pretty high ERA, but I always counted on him for some entertainment during those 11-2 defeats to the Mariners. Pep, I'm keeping your legend alive. You owe me another autograph.

8. LUIS POLONIA
Haha, wow was I gay for this guy back in the day. I was in San Francisco (shocker) the day the Angels traded a past-his-prime-that-he-never-really-had Claudell Washington for sparkplug Luis Polonia. I wrote it down in the newspaper I had on my lap and knew that this would turn out to be a great trade for the Halos. I couldn't have been more right. The guy just did everything right, except maybe for sleeping with that 15-year-old in Milwaukee back in '89. Probably not the smartest idea. But on the field Polonia was the man, consistently hitting in the .300s with tons of steals. The one knock on him was his defense and in fact, this is my favorite all-time quote about Polonia, albeit a big slap in the face.

"With Luis Polonia, it's like 'Catch 22'... Hit him a hundred fly balls, and he'll catch 22" - Dennis Lamp

Did I mention I used to write haikus and other forms of poetry about No. 22 back in seventh grade? No? Uh, well, um, I was just kidding about that.

7. MIKE HOLTZ
Another member of the '97 bullpen, Holtz was the man against lefties. Yes, I know it's surprising, but back in the 90s the Angels actually had good lefties in the 'pen. None of this Scott Schoeneweis, Mark Lukasiewicz, Rich Rodriguez, Jason Christiansen, J.C. Romero (should I keep going?) crap. Holtz came in to face Ken Griffey, he got Ken Griffey out. He didn't come in to face Griffey, walk him, then give up a homer to Paul Sorrento or something. The guy was (actually, he still is) 5'9, had a great curveball and apparently enjoyed a nice Red Delicious apple in his spare time. What's not to like about him?

6. NOLAN RYAN
In all reality, he should be higher (or lower?) on my list. He is a family icon. My late grandfather, the purple-hearted Archibald Dennison Scott III, had a favorite player: Nolan Ryan. My grandma and aunt? Nolan Ryan. My mom? Juan Beniquez, actually, but you get the point. Ryan was revered in our family as a man to look up to, a man that knew how to pitch, strike hitters out like no one else could, and a man that knew not to let young punks like Robin Ventura intimidate him. Nolan Ryan was the intimidator, not some goofy guy from Oklahoma State! In fact, he means so much to my family that my first son's name will be Robin, er, Nolan Ryan. I even tried to slip it past my sedated wife on the day our daughter was born, but she nixed that attempt right before I wrote the N. And good thing, too. You think my daughter would have an enjoyable childhood with a name like Nolan? It could be worse. She could be a boy named Robin.

"Chone Figgins is Gary Pettis Without the Glove"

I can't remember who said this, but I wish it was me. It is amazing how true this is.

The peace which others seek they find

"I forgot to mention that Knights FC does battle vs. the Skallywags tonight at 9:45 at the San Siro."

I'm still reeling from our loss last night. We outplayed them for 3/4 of the game only to run out of gas in the last nine minutes.

So Brian does not think this is becoming a fut-blog, I will say that Fiasco did a very nice job covering yet another Mad-Lib injury to help the Halos win last night. But Tony, no, it does not matter. The Angels have seven games against the pAthetics. If they win them all, they will win the division..

Let's gear up for winter discussions. Since our NFL teams are bums, shall we discuss breakfast cereals? Or perhaps the newest gadgetry? Middle East geopolitics?

And now for something completely different...

Our favorite Romanian soccer teams, Steaua, Rapid, and Dinamo, all enjoyed great success over the last couple days in European club competitions. Steaua, my personal fave, is in the top flight Champions League. They wasted no time yesterday, going to Ukrainian side Dynamo Kiev, and spanking them 4-1!! Rapid and Dinamo (both from Bucuresti) enjoyed success in Europe's lesser club competition, UEFA Cup. Rapid downed Portugise side Nacional 1-0 and Dinamo handed Grecian club Xanthi a 4-3 loss.

Now, that truly was different.

Angels vs. Rangers at 5:05 pm today. Will it matter?

Sweet, there is nothing left to say

Hope is the anchor of the soul. But when hope is misdirected, it can be a cancerous sore. The Angels gained a game on the gAy's last night and for what? So many of we dull-eyed fans can hope for another day that they have a chance to play bonus-ball? It's not to be. Ah! We have lived our lives in a land of dreams!

rAiders lost 27-0 on Monday. And so hope again takes hold.

Tuesday, September 12, 2006

Dare I waste a "baseball diaries" on these blokes?!

The answer is no. So I will just comment. Another chance to get closer to chokeland, another cheap loss. Lackness pitched a heck of a game until the 5th. The Angels' bats were asleep at the wheel vs. Contreras. That's a shame. Oh, well, there's always next year!

And to wrap up my football picks, I ended up 9-7, with last night's win and loss. Sheesh...

Monday, September 11, 2006

One step beyond... madness?

Well, let's just say I'm at my wit's end (man, it didn't take too long to get here either...). The start of football has left me wanting. I could go 8-8 or 10-6, depending on tonight's outcomes. I barely survived passage into the second round of my "king of the hill" tourny on a SAFETY of all scores! (yeah, that huge sigh of relief that was heard across the nation? that was me.) The donkeys looked like a bunch of jackasses against the Ram D. Yo! Jason! How did you get Bal over TB right? Anyway, the 49ers blew some good opportunities to upset the Cards. Then, Cardiff City gets dropped by Preston North End 2-1, Newcastle losses again, this time to Fulham. And, to top things, the Freakin' Angels made up NO ground on chokeland!

The Angels start a 3 game series vs. The Black sox tonight. Just what they needed...

Opening Day Ramblings

Here are some thoughts on Opening Day 2006.

1. The Dolphins need to run the ball more often, especially because Culpepper is a piece of crap.

2. If Ronnie Brown didn't get two TD's tonight, this post would be a lot more venomous and my team would probably be called I Hate Culpepper.

3. Marty Booker is No. 86. My bad, Combs and Sanchez.

4. I hate Bill Cowher and basically everyone on the Steelers, except Travis Kirschke and Heath Miller. And I only like Miller because we share the same last name, and because I like Heath bars.

5. I hate the fact that we'll have to listen to retarded Steeler fans talk about their supposed dynasty for 11 more days.

6. Since my current favorite player decided to get shot by police three times last week, my new favorite player is Wes Welker. The odds of him getting shot by police? About the same odds as me picking up Aaron Brooks.

7. 1540AM does not come in on my car stereo. Awesome.

8. Combs is pretty happy with Randy McMichael right now. One catch, 15 yards. He had a chance to get about 40 yards, but a penalty and a dropped ball helped him look like crap.

9. Pretty normal move by Frank tonight giving some old lady a cinnamon knot. I still don't know why he did it, or why the lady actually ate it.

10. And finally, congrats to Barber for the birth of his son, Christian James Barber. Let me be the only one on here that doesn't make fun of him on the biggest day of his life. Here, here.

my first post

"What else is there besides baseball than 'random stuff in our lives?'”

We should think there is much indeed, but who wants to test the theory? Anyway, what seems random only seems random. Which logically leads to the next point:

The Knights FC host Mexica tonight at 18:45 PST at Big League Dreams in beautiful Chino Hills, CA.

the baseball diaries

"Waiting long downstairs. Trying hard to find the link..."

Five in a row? We're getting spoiled here!

Yes the Angels have won five straight after completing the sweep of the O's. Good for them too because they will face the Blue Gays for three games starting tomorrow night. Even with this hot streak, they are still 5 1/2 behing chokeland. And that blows.

How about this guy?! Anibal Sanchez, rookie Fish pitcher, tossed a NO HITTER yesterday vs. the D-backs. Yikes, that's awesome! I thought for the last out of the game though, the runner was safe, but awesome none the less!

This is the first diaries on the new blog! Enjoy! Post much!

We've Evolved!

Here it is, everybody! And yes, by everybody I mean Tony and Jason. Ask and ye shall receive. We are doing away with the archaic e-mail format of discussing the Angels, Matt Wise and whatever else piques our interest. Heck, we can even talk about English soccer on here!

So heeeeeeeeeeeere weeeeeeeeeeee go!
